Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
about MOVER MOMS
Who are MoverMoms participants?
Anyone can join, but the group is geared towards moms.
What is the suggested donation?
Annual dues are currently $10 but several participants have opted to give a larger donation to the non-profit organization.
Are there a limited number of people who can participate in MoverMoms?
At the moment there is no limit. We currently have about 110 participants.
Are kids and spouses or other relatives allowed to come to the projects?
Generally yes, though there is often a minimum age for kids, depending on the project. But the organization is primarily geared towards moms, so projects are selected with moms in mind.
What types of projects does this group do?
We do a wide range of projects, including serving meals at shelters or hospitals, packing gift baskets for cancer patients, cheering on and/or participanting in cause-related athletic events, and helping out at festivals run by non-profits. We also have projects the involve helping the elderly, working with animals, and assisting disadvantaged groups. We do art-related projects that we donate to good causes, and we do several collection drives each year.
How often are the projects and how are they posted?
Projects take place once or twice a month and on an as-needed basis in the case of a sudden tragedy or emergency. A description of the project and what it entails is sent via email to all participants about 2 weeks ahead of time, with a reminder and final details message sent within a few days of the project date. Participants attnend these projects at their own expense.
Are participants required to attend every project?
Definitely not. Participants are asked to commit to a minimum of one or two projects per year, but not all of them. We all have busy lives and this is a group that welcomes participation when they can fit the project into their schedule.
Do participants need to bring anything to the projects?
Participants are sometimes asked to bring a food item when we are serving a meal, but generally participants are not asked to bring anything. However during our collection drives -- for such things as clothes, food, or school supplies -- we do ask for contributions of needed items that we then bring as one large donation.
How long is each project?
Typically projects run for about 2 hours. Occasionally, special projects (such as the Virginia Tech care package collection project) last for several days but in that case participants are only asked to do short (1-3 hour) shifts.
What else does the group do besides volunteer projects?
MoverMoms has a variety of education programs. There is a book discussion that meets several times a year in which we read books about people who have made a positive difference in society. Also, the group does outings to performances, exhibits, and other places that are educational and/or inspirational to our participants.
